This report is part of a project aimed at investigating the road safety effects of various telematics applications intended to support the driver. It is intended to construct a checklist for detailed analysis of aspects of Advanced Traffic Telematics (ATT) systems for which sufficient knowledge exists to conduct a safety check. However, the checklist constructed on the basis of results so far is predominantly based upon criteria related to overload. Criteria for checking overload are presented for two information systems: visual and auditory displays. Criteria gauge underload in relation to ATT systems are significantly fewer. Especially criteria to rate the effects of `counterproductive' behavioural adaptation to ATT systems are very incomplete. As long as the safety checklist is incomplete, laboratory testing should be complemented by field testing, either with instrumented vehicles in real traffic or with driving simulators.
