Samenvatting

The IN-SAFETY project (EU-FP6, Project No. 506716) aims at supporting policies in the field of road traffic safety by developing concepts for "selfexplaining roads" and "forgiving roads". In the past, the terms "self explaining" and "forgiving" have primarily been used in the field of road design measures. The IN-SAFETY project focuses on both road design measures and technology supported actions, such as the implementation of autonomous driver assistance systems and co-operative systems. The IN-SAFETY project aims to use intelligent, intuitive and cost-efficient combinations of new technologies and traditional infrastructure best practice applications, inorder to enhance the forgiving and self-explanatory nature of roads. The project's final results are expected to be available in 2008. The following paper gives an overview of the methodology of assessing and benchmarkingof forgiving road environments. The paper shows methods how the safety potential of certain forgiving road environment measures can be estimated - taking into account the differences between road side measures and in-vehicle systems.
