Samenvatting

A study conducted on behalf of the European Commission to assess how roadtransport companies could be better involved in the task of halving the number of road accidents in Europe is described. The study involved an analysis of existing road safety within transport companies, an analysis of literature and relevant experiences in USA, Australia and New Zealand on thedevelopment of road safety at company level, and the development of an 'Action Package' with specified strategies between Community level and individual companies. The review of safety criteria focused on metrics relatingto the vehicle safety systems, human resource management and drivers, management and organisation, and risk assessment, certification and initiatives.
