This paper addresses the following question: Which travel risks are associated with a given door-to-door trip when different modes of transport are considered? The trip modes could be for example walk-bus-walk or bicycle-train-walk. Travel risk figures have been developed as injuries per million trips. This allows the evaluation of the safety impacts of changes in the modal split in urban travel. One major result is that the safety in public transport trips is strongly dependant on the safety of the access transport i.e. the safety of walking or cycling. For this reason public transport safety considering short door-to-door trips is hardly better than car trips while the public transport modes are safer on longer distances. Policy implications are discussed. (A)
