There are today well over 12m. Vehicles on the roads of Britain and the motor vehicle has become indispensable to our social, commercial and industrial life. The past decade has seen a rapid increase in construction of new roads and modernization of old roads, and Road Research Laboratory has played its part in solving the problems in design and construction of the roads and bridges being built in the programme, particularly in providing for the increasing number and weight of vehicles using these roads.
