Samenvatting

This paper describes the application of a Channel Information System (CIS) to the prevention of rear-end collisions. The specific countermeasure concept examined is a look ahead headway detection (LAHD) system. On-board processors receive, integrate, display, and transmit updated information to following vehicles. Proximity, brake status, and turn signal status is displayed to all drivers in a linear formation (chain) for use in collision avoidance. Brake data is also displayed externally and rearward by a Center High Mounted Warning Lamp (CHMWL). Data such as velocity, mass, braking capabilities of vehicles, and road conditions may be used for integration into an Automatic Intelligent Cruise Control (AICC) and an automatic braking system.
