Samenvatting

The goal of the project was to define safety objectives for RTI development and implementation within DRIVE. The approach of the work was primarily top-down, i.e. traffic safety problems were analyzed and problem areas defined that needed to be treated and might be positively influenced by RTI technology. At the same time, RTI systems under development within DRIVE and PROMETHEUS were surveyed regarding their possible safety effects on the selected problem areas. The main steps of defining safety objectives were as follows: Traffic accidents statistics from some European countries were analysed and the most serious (i.e. costly) traffic safety problems were selected for further study (in-depth analysis of underlying factors using a behavioural-interactional frame of reference, review of traditional safety measures and their effects on the given problem, etc.) RTI measures planned, designed or implemented within DRIVE or Prometheus were analysed from the aspect of their possible and expected traffic safety effects in general, and specifically on the selected problem areas. The other DRIVE projects were surveyed and their objectives analysed by defining their safety and non-safety objectives.
