Samenvatting

Road accidents on rural roads are a particular problem in Switzerland. Brief details are given of the Swiss approach to constructing new roads and reconstructing existing ones with particular reference to cross section and road geometry. A method is described which has been developed to assess risk values when reconstructing mountain passes. Sections of a pass are allocated a risk value of between 1 and 9 representing a combination of accident frequency and accident consequences. Measures are then carried out with the aim of providing the whole length of the road with uniform characteristics.
