This study focussed on small workgroups (up to six workers) employed by a large organization with responsibility for road construction and repair. Five separate types of roadside duties were examined; surveying, road construction/repair, pavement inspection, engineering and heavy vehicle enforcement. The data collection included employee responses to a questionnaire, discussions with work crews and observations of their work practices, and speed measurements taken at a number of worksites. Both metropolitan and rural worksites were observed. Common issues identified by the workers included conspicuity of the works area and/or workers, problems with or lack of suitable safety equipment, and a lack of motorist respect for the dangers of the situation reflected in the likelihood that vehicle speeds were not reduced in the works area. Observations of roadworks sites and speed measurements provided evidence to support the employee's concerns. Recommendations regarding work practices in small workgroups and devices that may increase the safety levels for the workers were made.
