An OECD road research group examined the problem of the prevention of accidents involving users of two-wheeled vehicles. An introductory chapter presents the trends in two-wheeler accidents and includes a review on the state of the research carried out in this area. Chapter II presents basic data on the traffic safety problem associated with the use of two-wheeled vehicles and provides in tabular form a review of legal aspects in OECD participating countries. Chapters III and IV include an analysis of accidents together with a study of contributory factors to accidents and give results of research on crash factors and rider protection. Chapter V reviews the state-of-the-art of preventive countermeasures in particular those which are presently used or planned. Chapter VI contains the conclusions and recommendations by the group and highlights that more research is needed before detailed countermeasures can be developed and recommended. Finally, future research subjects are stated in chapter VII. (Author/publisher)
