Samenvatting

This volume is one of the six deliverables of the European research project PROMISING, on the promotion of mobility and safety of vulnerable road users. The research was carried out by a consortium of European partners, which was co-ordinated by the SWOV Institute for Road Safety Research, The Netherlands. This report is concerned with young drivers. Several statistics compiled from the BASt, IRTAD and the UNO data base were compiled to compare fatal car accidents in the EU and other industrialised countries. All the figures were calculated on the base of the year 1995 (latest available data). Comparing car related mortality rates of different countries one can see very important differences between countries; for example, Latvia shows the highest rate, the amount of fatalities is six times higher than in Japan, which shows the lowest rate. This means that geographical and/or cultural factors may be as important as age or gender. (A)
