Samenvatting

Since the 1960's, the most common form of impact attenuator in the world has been the sand filled, barrel type impact attenuator. There are over 40,000 sand tubs sold each year for use throughout the world. With ongoing harmonization within the EC and between the EC and the United States, the sand barrel leads the way in the non-redirective type cushion. It is the most practical cushion in the world. This particular cushion is currently being used in many applications outside of the United States. This presentation explores the widespread use of sand barrels in the United States over the twenty-six years since they were first approved. Current and historical tests are presented on different applications and different array patterns. In addition, user friendly modifications in the basic technology are explored. (A)
