Samenvatting

The Santa Monica Freeway Smart Corridor Demonstration project is an operational test of the integrated application of a variety of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) technologies and traffic management strategies. The Smart Corridor project area consists of a fourteen mile stretch of the Santa Monica Freeway in Los Angeles County (Interstate 10) between the Santa Ana Freeway (Interstate 5) and the San Diego Freeway (Interstate 405) and five major parallel arterials, namely Adams, Venice, Washington, Pico and Olympic Boulevards. The Smart Corridor comprises the following operating jurisdictions: State of California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), California Highway Patrol (CHP), Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA), City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT), City of Beverly Hills, and the City of Culver City. Caltrans and the CHP are responsible for the freeway and ramp meter operations, LACMTA for transit operations, while each of the cities are responsible for arterial and signal operations. The Smart Corridor system is designed to use the resources of all participating agencies to detect incidents and provide decision support for the management of recurring and non-recurring traffic congestion on the freeway and surface streets. Through the project, the operational activities of LADOT's Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control (ATSAC) Operations Center, Caltrans' Traffic Management Center, and the California Highway Patrol Los Angeles Communications Center are electronically linked through a network of distributed databases and expert systems. Operators at the various agencies interact with each other and the Smart Corridor system through graphical user interface workstations.
