Samenvatting

SARTRE is an acronym for the project "Social Attitudes to Road Traffic Risk in Europe", which implies a collaboration between a number of organisations in the field of traffic safety and road traffic research in Europe to carry out coordinated surveys. The first phase of the project started in the early 90's and then it included about 16 countries in Western and Central Europe. In the third round of the continued Sartre project, reported here, new interviews were conducted with European drivers to study their attitudes to traffic and traffic safety. This time the questionnaire contained 134 questions, and more than 23,000 drivers were interviewed in 23 countries in Western and Central Europe. The main topics were speeds, seat belts and alcohol, but the interview also covered some more general traffic safety issues, new technologies as well as some questions concerning self-reported behaviour. The purpose of the report is mainly to give a reasonably clear presentation of the available Sartre data in a format for those who wish to do their own data-digging and make their own comparisons. As an introduction the report contains a very brief account of the Sartre project and a number of more detailed comments regarding the limitations of the study and the obtained results. The major part of the report contains 128 tables, each giving the results of a single question in the inter¬view. The results are presented as response distributions for each participating country, supplemented with summarizing average or median results for ease of comparison.
