This paper considers the future of freight traffic and emissions in Europe based on two scenarios which differ in the degree to which countries are willing to tackle existing ecological, social and economic problems. Scenario 1 assumes appreciation of global problems, a resurgence of the concept of common interest and integration of European countries. Scenario 2 is characterised by increasing nationalism, short term policies and reduced competitiveness. Trends in freight transport are analysed for both scenarios and the results presented graphically. Emissions corresponding to the projected development of freight are also calculated and presented.
