In Dutch regional public transport, there is a trend towards larger companies that provide more commercial services besides public transport. Using a translog cost function, it is tested whether these trends are favourable to public transport companies. There are no economies of scale and scope. It is found: (1) that there is no cross-subsidizing between public transport and commercial activities; and (2) that there is room for efficiency improvement in Dutch regional public transport. (A)
