Samenvatting

This paper reviews existing research findings about the factors influencing the rising car travel by school children and current government programs that have been in place to curtail such trends. Preliminary investigation into changes in school children's travel patterns in the last decade are undertaken. The study utilises data from a variety of sources including the population censuses undertaken by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), the Victoria Activity and Travel Surveys (VATS) and a number of complementary special surveys and reports on children's travel. Finally, a wider framework is put forward for application to improve existing programs and to devise coherent new measures for reversing the current trend in school children's travel. The framework will also encourage programs to be developed from appropriate partnerships between parents, school communities, local/state government bodies and public and private transport service providers.
