This paper considers a number of the common but not often documented problems encountered in the use of secondary data sources in the transport field. Access to data, archiving and recovery of full documentation, the introduction of errors in interpretation as a result of adjustment of the data by third parties are amongst the questions considered. The types of problems encountered in making effective use of household interview surveys for activity time, travel participation and the levels of travel activity in Australian cities are reviewed, and a few of the opportunities for improving the effective use of these valuable (but in some ways flawed) data sets are illustrated.
