Samenvatting

This book contains ten papers on various aspects of roadworks and work zone safety from different parts of the world. The papers are relevant to engineers, managers, and supervisors in public and private organisations, which are responsible for planning, designing, and implementing construction and maintenance works on roads and streets open to the public. Each paper applies the principle that safety is an integral part of all construction and maintenance activities. All roadworks activities require an appropriate mixture of safety with supervision, skilled labour, and proper equipment and materials. Results will be unsatisfactory unless the requirements of all these factors are adequately met. The papers include general discussions of safety at roadworks in Australia, Finland, Hungary, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and the UK. The other papers cover: (1) the analysis of safety in motorway work zones in Japan; (2) road safety and roadwork signs in Quebec province, Canada; and (3) reducing the severity of traffic crashes in roadway work zones in the USA.
