Samenvatting

Violence contributes to feelings of insecurity on the public transport network. Insecurity can be generated by isolation or crowds, the presence of noisy groups, and by graffiti and negligence. For users of public transport the presence of staff and security personnel, video surveillance and help points improves security. As many verbal assaults are linked to problems of communication, some companies have developed staff training programmes. Public transport authorities have worked with the police, the law, authorities and schools and neighbourhood associations to improve security. The planning of stations and spaces is important in influencing feelings of security.
