Samenvatting

This report describes procedures used in developing a set of selection requirements and training objectives for operators of school buses. The selection requirements included collection and interpretation of personal history and other background information; physical examination covering vision, hearing, handicaps, and general health; written knowledge tests covering general driving and school bus operations; an on-road performance test; and an attitude measure. Training objectives covered all aspects of school bus operation and were specified at three different levels in order that training might be adapted to the resources of individual school districts. The selection requirements and training objectives were based upon an analysis of the qualifications required for safe and effective operation of school buses, as shown through the following sources: a) a review of the literature retating individual characteristics to safe driving, b) a systematic formal analysis of the school bus operator's tasks, c) a comparison of the background characteristics of high-and low-rated operators, d) the opinions of pupil transportation authorities as obtained through questionnaires and interviews, and e) observations of and interviews with school bus operators.
