Samenvatting

Sensor Combinations for Urban Roads and Expressways (SECURE) is a British project to demonstrate an in-car sensor system to aid Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) including collision warning/avoidance. It is funded in part by the Department of Trade and Industry and involves the automotive industry, Defence Evaluation and Research Agency (DERA) and universities. The sensor system comprises two complementary subsystems, vision and radar. A data fusion module integrates the sensed data and is required to degrade gracefully should a sensor fail. It interfaces with a vehicle dynamics controller via CAN-bus for closed loop longitudinal control. The scope of the project extends from motorways down to two-way traffic on "A" roads. Lanes and objects on the road (which may or may not be obstacles) are tracked, the obstacles are identified and collision with them is avoided by slowing down or braking if necessary. (A)
