Samenvatting

The problems of cars in areas where pedestrians and people on bicycles are, is mostly the cars' speed. Methods must be found to make sure that vehicles drive slowly. Car drivers must adapt their speed to a given situation. Car drivers should be forced to drive slowly, which can be done by: (1) physical barriers, (2) visual devices, (3) psychological devices, (4) social influences, and (5) laws. Combinations of all these tools are used, and examples in some Dutch cities are given. For the covering abstract see IRRD 253224.
