Arguments for and against the separation or segregation of different forms of traffic in the interests of safety, environment and convenience are discussed studying principal forms of separation and segregation used in the building of the English new town of Stevenage. Main objectives set for the creation of the new highway network were: (1) direct routes between main destinations; (2) limitation of conflict opportunities on the main routes; (3) all carriageways should be available over their whole width at all times for moving traffic; (4) segregation of the more vulnerable classes of road users from the better protected classes; and(5) spreading of duration of peak movements during the day.
