Samenvatting

Speed limits in Australia, typically based on engineering principles, are much higher than those internationally. A safe system approach aimed at further reducing the level of road trauma in Australasia calls for greater attention to safety when specifying acceptable travel speeds on our roads. Austroads recently commissioned a study aimed at establishing a balance between harm minimisation and mobility when setting speed limits to help achieve a safer transportation system. This paper reports on developments to date and future initiatives to achieve this objective. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E214930.
