Samenvatting

This project is to research the need for resources on sharing the road for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. They are to be used by ôSafer Routesö practitioners in New Zealand and as stand alone resources where they are needed. A literature review of ôShare the Roadö type resources in New Zealand and overseas resulted in seven indicators of good practice for ôShare the Roadö resources. These were: 1. Community action; 2. Community involvement in planning; 3. Promotion of simple positive actions; 4. Use of persuasive or emotional style; 5. Information distributed in a variety of ways; 6. School based education to contain roadside training or at least video; 7. Education co-ordinated with enforcement. The interviews with six existing ôSafer Routesö practitioners showed that each project was unique and had different issues and needs from the others. The study resulted in several recommendations for contents of a resource kit. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E213900.
