Samenvatting

This paper reviews the ways by which the lap/ sash belt system for passenger cars could be improved to give a higher level of crash protection for adult occupants. It includes discussions of possible improvements to the car and to the environment but its main findings are restricted to the seatbelt system including the seat and its anchorages. The authors conclude that improvements in the belt system are required in the short term covering minimum lap strap angle, belt anchorages on seats, force limiters, pre-tensioners, tension reducers and sash guides, and strength of seat anchorages. Installation of automatic locking and retracting lap- sash belts in the rear seating positions is considered essential in order to improve wearing rates. (Aauthor/publisher)
