This paper describes the progress made by the SHRP (Strategic Highway Research Program) Asphalt Program since the 1987 International Conference, with emphasis on the first round of products to be produced by the program. During the past 15 months, three major components of the program have been established: 1) binder characterization and evaluation, 2) testing and measuring of asphalt-aggregate interactions and mixtures, and 3) asphalt modification. Although the research studies implementing these components are still in their early phases, important and useful results have already been realized, several of which will be reviewed in this paper.
