Samenvatting

Variable message sign (VMS) installation is not a subject to be approached lightly. Careful selection is required to get the right coverage without wasting resources. There are numerous journey planning systems already developed or still being developed, with the aim of influencing the travellers' choice of mode of travel. This article discusses an effective driver information system employing variable message signs (VMS). These display information to all drivers regardless of the equipment fitted in vehicles or the way in which the information is broadcast; all drivers receive the same information in a consistent format which is relevant to the situation; and the operators can be confident that the majority of drivers will read the message and take appropriate action and, from a safety and legal point of view, will be seen to have acted reasonably.
