Findings of a study investigating the road safety effect of traffic signal co- ordination for a sample of 10 co- ordinated route within Melbourne are presented. Major shortcomings of past studies on the road safety impact of traffic signal co- ordination are firstly outlined and the need to overcome these is stressed.Using a before and after analysis method, a non significant 6% reduction in reported casualty accidents is found over all routes.
