Buckinghamshire County Council's solution to improving the safety at a particular bend that was proving a serious hazard to motorcyclists is described. The concept of motorcycle control contained in the Motorcycle Roadcraft book, published by the HMSO and used by the police to learn motorcycling skills, was applied to the bend. In order to improve visibility, vegetation was removed and verge markers were put on the outer side of the bend. The verge markers were extended into the straight in both directions, helping the biker to focus on the vanishing point. This is the point in the distance where the left and right sides of the road appear to intersect with each other. The point is used by advanced bikers to assess the upcoming curves in the road and judge the entry speed and optimum line. Malcolm Jones has produced a booklet entitled 'Where you look is where you go (WYLIWYG) to help road designers improve safety for motorcyclists.
