Samenvatting

The reflection properties of road surfaces can be characterized by a "degree of brightness"and a "degree of specular reflection", both of which are defined in the paper in such a way that they can easily be measured. A measuring device has been developed allowing rapid measurement of both characteristics outdoors. It is shown that the average luminance of a road surface for an arbitrary arrangement of lanterns of known light distribution can be easily calculated on the basis of the described characteristics. It is suggested that a classification of road surface according to their reflection properties should be based on the 2 "degrees" mentioned above.
