Simplified Explicit Method for Thermal Stresses in Asphalt Overlays on Cement Concrete Pavements.

This paper first investigates the appropriateness of the solid, plane, and bi-layer beam on elastic foundation models to evaluate the structural responses in asphalt overlays due to the temperature-induced joint opening and slab curling in cement concrete pavements. It is concluded that the deformation in the asphalt overlay can be determined by superposition of the vertical deformations of the bi-layer beams. Due to the discontinuity at the joints in concrete pavements, the thermal stresses in the asphalt overlay experienced remarkable stress concentration and convergence problems near the joints. Therefore, sectional inner forces were used to characterizethe structural behavior of the asphalt overlay. The sectional inner forces based on the bi-layer beam model agreed well with those based on the plane model by adjusting the effect coefficients of the uniaxial tension-compression and horizontal shear deformations. For engineering application, this paper divides the deformation due to temperature variations into three components: one due to the interface friction-induced bending, one due to the shrinkage-induced tension-compression in the lower beam, and one due to the curling-induced bending in the lower beam. This paper further investigates the interaction between the three deformation components and presents simplified, explicit formulas for evaluating the sectional inner and interface contact forces.
