During 1962 an origin destination study was conducted as part of an areawide transportation study of new haven, connecticut. Mass interview by television was substituted for the standard door to door technique in an attempt to obtain the accuracy and control of the home-interview method at the low cost of postal surveys. The study, its results and the difficulties encountered are discussed. Methods of removing sample bias and validating the data are presented. While the results of this first attempt at a television survey were neither better nor worse than those of a conventional postcard survey, the method is believed to have potential for gathering large samples at low cost.
