Samenvatting

Relationships between traffic flow and journey speed have been obtained on four lengths of single track road. These roads situated in Ross and Cromarty had varying alignments and topographical conditions. Values of traffic capacity in vehicles per hour and per 16 hour day have been derived from the results. The values of capacity range from 0 to 280 vehicles per hour according to particular site conditions and the average speed regarded as acceptable. For an acceptable journey speed of 20 mile/h the capacity varied from 100 vehicles/h for a length having poor alignment and sight distance to 220 vehicles/h for a well aligned road. It is expected that these results will assist the Scottish Development Department in construction a system of priorities for the reconstruction and widening of single track roads in the highlands of Scotland.
