Samenvatting

Situation Awareness has been widely examined in the aviation and military domains. In this paper, the concept of Situation Awareness and its relevance to driving behaviour and how it might be used to productively investigate the impact of ITS on driving is examined. A preliminary goal-directed model of driving behaviour is presented which incorporates the three levels of Situation Awareness with strategic, tactical, and operational goals of driving. Methods for the measurement of Situation Awareness are discussed. The main contributions of a Situation Awareness approach to ITS safety research are made conceptually, methodologically, and through increased diagnosticity. (A*)
