THE SITUATIONAL RISKINESS OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

The percieved risk of alcohol consumption in drinking and driving, interactions with police, and the probability of intoxication, were investigated using face-to-face interviews of 603 respondents at two u.S. Military enlisted men's clubs. Most ss were young male drinkers in the military. Results show that beer was perceived as less risky than liquor, with males and drinkers in particular ranking beeras a low risk beverage. When intoxication was considered, drinkers ranked their preferred beverage as less risky than their alternative. The perception that beer is less risky than liquor did not vary significantly by sex or most other characteristics.
