Whilst there is a general unity in the desire to increase road traffic safety and thus to lower the number of accidents, the ways and means to achieve this are controversial. The aim of this project - which was carried out with the support of BMW AG., Munich - was to collate, categorise and evaluate situational behaviour characteristics based on study of the relevant literature. The project focused in particular on the areas of speed selection and accident occurrence. The significance of road construction measures for driving safety characteristics was investigated, for example, by creating cycle routes at intersections and inner-city areas with a 30 km/h speed limit. The characteristics found were validated in field, laboratory and simulation experiments. (Author/publisher)
