Smart traffic signal operation tries to attain high levels of flow and safety by means of its flexibility with respect to the prevailing traffic conditions, i.e., the quantity of traf- fic and the composition of the relevant streams. This report summarizes the effect of traffic signals becoming smarter on user behaviour and its possible consequences for safety.
