In the last decade the growth of the road network lagged behind the growth of mobility. There was a strong increase in vehicle ownership and an increasing suburbanization, but a decrease in the construction of motorways, due to the lack of money and due to the attention to nature and environment to avoid queues alternative routes were selected by drivers via secondary and tertiary roads. These rat runs gave a gain of time in comparison with the most functional route. The purpose of this study was to get an insight into the problems of rat run traffic on rural roads. The cause of rat run traffic: the way in which the research is done; the consequences; and some possible solutions are presented.
