Samenvatting

The book describes steps towards the generation of highways and vehicles that will interact to form intelligent vehicle-highway systems. A brief overview is given of the formative program activities in the United States, Europe and Japan to provide a broad perspective. Details are given of activities in the United States with selected examples from Europe and Japan included in separate chapters to provide a basis for comparison. Examples are given of the use of advanced traffic management systems, advanced traveller information systems, commercial vehicle operations and advanced vehicle control systems to improve driver performance. Also included are recent developments in advanced public transportation systems and advanced rural transportation systems. The Smart Corridor, a pioneering multifaceted demonstration project involving a 12 mile section of the Santa Monica Freeway in Los Angeles is described. Also described are the Californian PATH project, and the ADVANCE project, the first large scale dynamic route guidance system in the United States. An example is given of a system, ADVANTAGE, to improve the efficiency of commercial vehicle operations in a six state corridor from Florida to Michigan.
