This issue of Current Topics includes over 65 abstracts of reports, conference papers, books and journal articles which focus on recent developments in "smart" technology for transport and the applications and benefits for road users and operators. Amongst the topics covered are the development of contactless smartcard and automatic vehicle recognition for urban transport debiting (e.g. fare collection, parking payment) and for motorway tolling and surveillance. These items have been selected from the material added to the Transport Research Laboratory's Library Database between 2002 and 2004. Much of the relevant English language published literature from the UK, USA, Australia and Europe is included; some of the non-UK literature is included courtesy of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database.
