In the SMILE (`Strategic Model for Integrated Logistics and Evaluation') model four main modules, can be distinguished. In the Building Scenario module, the user (policymakers and researchers) can specify expected relevant developments in the next 30 or more years. The Economy and Transport modules are the modules where the actual calculations (forecasts) are made. SMILE will be developed as a year-to-year model, taking feedbacks into consideration. A characteristic feature of these modules is the consistent use of a chain structure. This structure starts in the Economy module where the production structure of the commodities, from raw material to end product, is implemented. In the Transport module, module, chains are used for logistics behaviour and in the multi-model network. In the fourth module, the Evaluation module, the user gets insight into the consequences of the forecasted flows: (1) indicators which have an effect on the economy; (2) consequences for the transport and distribution sector; (3) mobility indicators; and (4) impacts on the environment.
