Samenvatting

In order to investigate strategies to reduce speeding behaviour on urban arterial roads, a study was conducted on two arterial roads in the city of Haarlem. Within the study different measures were taken. In the first place, some infrastructural adjustments were carried out. On one of the roads the number of lanes was reduced from 2 x 2 lane. In addition at both sides of the road a cycle track was made. On the other road, which already consited of 2 x 1 lane, the lanes in both directions were narrowed and there also a cycle track as well as a parking lane was constructed. Secondly, some publicity and communication activities were carried out. Besides a few press releases about the project and its results, on one of the two roads feedback signs were placed nearby the road. On the signs the percentage of car drivers who were not speeding was weekly indicated, during serveral months. Thirdly, on both roads the enforcement efforts by the police were intensified. During the whole study driving speed of motorists was registered automatically by loop detection on both experimental roads as well as on a comparable control road. In addition before and during the study accident figurs were exploratively analysed.
