Samenvatting

In 1974 a general speed limit of 100 km/h was introduced on the dutch motorways for all vehicles, excluding lorries and buses, for which an 80 km/h speed limit was set. From the moment of introduction these limits were criticized and discussed. Therefore research has been carried out into the effects of the present policy and into some alternatives. Alternatives discussed are: (1) increase of 100 km/h limit for cars to 120 km/h for instance; (2) modifying the 100 km/h limit into an advisory speed limit of 100 km/h; (3) increase of the 80 km/h limit for heavy traffic to 100 km/h for instance; (4) modifying general speed limits into more differentiated speed limits; (5) more police enforcement for the existing limits.
