This publication is constituted of the papers and discussions from a symposium, the object of which was the development of a balance view of the current status of societal risk assessment's role in the public policy process, and the establishment of future directions of research. The symposium was structured in two dimensions: certainty versus uncertainty and subjective versus the objective.
