Samenvatting

In the Netherlands, Overijssel is one of the provinces with the best facilities for cyclists. This explains why cycling has been made one of the spearheads of the province's policy on tourism. A basic infrastructure has been set out in the "Bicycle Paths Plan for Overijssel". More than 300 kilometres of bicycle paths have already been constructed, with widths and surfaces adapted to circumstances and functions. A few hundred kilometres will be added in the coming years. The bicycle paths are of great economic significance to Overijssel. They are a source of substantial revenue. Developments in society in the 1990's will be greatly influenced by the increasing attention to health and environment. The emphasis will be on active, invigorating and safe transport. The bicycle will undoubtedly play an important role. The "1000 cycles plan" is a good example of the policy for the 1990's. The plan calls for the development of an environment-friendly transport system based on bicycles and public transport. Water transport also figures prominently in the new network. The national government is financing the infrastructure. Private companies are financing the risk-bearing parts of the plan such as a rent-a-bike scheme and bus services.
