Samenvatting

This article describes the SOCRATES project which is investigating the use of cellular radio for providing a complete Road Transport Informatics (RTI) system. Applications include: dynamic route guidance; advanced traffic control; parking management and information systems; fleet management; public transport management and information systems, such as dynamic fleet scheduling; hazard warning systems; emergency call facilities and automatic debiting for toll collection. The project is divided into 5 tasks: traffic modelling and traffic management; communications; system design; in-vehicle equipment; and testing. Each of these is described briefly. A demonstration site has already been implemented at Geldorp, showing the principles of SOCRATES, including the use of a short range radio beacon which can be used for vehicle location. Work is also well underway to implement SOCRATES at a test site in Gothenburg, Sweden.
