Samenvatting

This paper examines the effect on accidents of introducing legislation in three fields of road safety in Australia. Firstly, the impact of changes in drink driving laws are evaluated by examining changes in detection and accident rates. Secondly, compulsory wearing of safety helmets for motorcyclists was introduced showing a substantial drop in fatalities. Thirdly, the introduction of compulsory seat belt wearing in Victoria is discussed in the light of failure of the publicity campaigns for voluntary wearing.
