IN THE ARTICLE A METHOD IS PROPOSED FOR EXPLAINING VARIATIONS IN THE MARKET SHARES OF DIFFERENT TICKET TYPES (ANNUAL, MONTHLY AND WEEKLY SEASONS, FULL FARE AND CHEAP DAILIES) AS RELATIVE FARES AND EXTERNAL FACTORS VARY. RESULTS SUGGEST THAT ANNUAL SEASON TICKET FARES ARE TOO LOW AND LOW-COST, OFF-PEAK TICKETS ARE TOO EXPENSIVE. IT IS CONSIDERED THAT REVENUE COULD BE INCREASED BY PRICE DISCRIMINATION AGAINST SEASON TICKET HOLDERS SO THAT COSTS COULD BE REDUCED BY HELPING TO SPREAD PEAK LOAD. THE LOSS OF TRAFFIC RESULTING FROM THE OPENING OF A COMPETING MOTORWAY WAS PREDOMINANTLY FROM CHEAP DAY TRAVEL. NO EFFECT WAS DETECTED FROM CHANGES IN SERVICE FREQUENCIES.
